Non-Fiction

Juliette Binoche and Guillame Canet reunite with acclaimed director Olivier Assayas (Personal Shopper, Carlos) for this wry, slyly seductive tale of sex, lies, and literature. Set amidst the bohemian intelligentsia of the Parisian publishing world, Non-Fiction traces the romantic and emotional fallout that results when a controversial writer (Vincent Macaigne) begins blurring the line between fact and fiction, using his real-life love affairs—including a passionate fling with an actress (Binoche) who happens to be married to his editor (Canet)—as fodder for his explosive new novel. Balancing dry wit with keen observations on the tensions between art, commerce, and technology, Non-Fiction is a buoyant, breezy delight from a master director at his most effortlessly brilliant.

“Few of today’s major filmmakers have been so unafraid to use the language of the present in order to articulate the anxieties that connect us to the past. But now, with the spry and deceptively slight NON-FICTION, Assayas has pivoted in a bold new direction… an inextricably French romp about the frustrations of trying to leave your mark on — or not be swept to sea by — a culture where photos disappear as soon as you’ve seen them, the most vicious murders are executed on message boards, and your mistress hasn’t seen a single Ingmar Bergman film. – David Ehrlich, Indiewire

“This is a major entry in a fascinating career — a treat for the director’s devotees as well as French-cinema buffs in general. Powered by a quartet of superb performances — including another jewel-like turn from Juliette Binoche — NON-FICTION begins as a talky study of the Parisian intelligentsia, then gradually tightens its emotional grip. It’s the latest evidence of the director’s gift for tackling grave subjects with the lightest of touches…” – Jon Frosch, Hollywood Reporter

“NON-FICTION is no mere parody of France’s chattering literati. One of the film’s strengths – indeed its main strength – is that it allows satire to co-exist with intellectual engagement. Infectious…a twinkly sex-and-ideas comedy that channels the spirit of Eric Rohmer.” – Lee Marshall, Screen International

Talk. Talk. Talk. That’s what goes on in 'Non-Fiction,' the new comedy of surprising gravity from writer-director Olivier Assayas ('Clouds of Sils Maria,' 'Irma Vep'). Oh, but *what* talk: a tumble of words flowing from a master. There’s sex, of course. — 'Non-Fiction' is a French film — but in this ...
